  • About The Role

  • Forward Trust is seeking an experienced Dependency and Recovery Worker to join our team in Thurrock and Basildon. This role is embedded within probation services and will focus on supporting individuals on probation who are affected by substance use needs and/or alcohol misuse. Evidence shows that providing the right support to vulnerable offenders can help break the cycle of addiction, reduce reoffending, and improve long-term recovery outcomes. As part of our integrated service, you will work closely with probation officers, courts, and treatment providers to ensure clients are supported into the right recovery pathways.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Work with People on Probation referred through criminal justice pathways, including Police Investigation Centres.
    • Increase uptake of Community Sentence Treatment Requirements (CSTRs), including:
    • Drug Rehabilitation Requirements (DRRs)
    • Alcohol Treatment Requirements (ATRs)
    • Mental Health Treatment Requirements (MHTRs)
    • Alcohol Abstinence Monitoring Requirements (AAMRs)
    • Conduct suitability assessments for court-ordered treatment requirements, providing expert advice to magistrates and probation teams.
    • Where necessary, attend Magistrates’ and Crown Courts to support recommendations and client engagement.
    • Hold a caseload of approximately 15–20 clients, with flexibility depending on service demands.
    • Deliver harm reduction advice, structured interventions, and abstinence-based support tailored to client needs.
    • Provide training and mentoring to probation staff, increasing their confidence and skills in supporting clients with substance use issues.
    • Work across probation offices, courts, custodial settings, and satellite clinics as required.
    • Support service outcome targets by ensuring engagement, attendance, and measurable progress in recovery.
    • Be flexible to support occasional evening or weekend work to maintain continuity of care.

    What We’re Looking For 

    • Experience of working within substance misuse services and with Criminal Justice clients.
    • Experience of carrying out comprehensive assessments, risk management plans and the design and implementation of SMART care plans.
    • Experience of working with CJ agencies such as the police, probation, CRC and prisons.
    • Experience of delivering structured interventions to service users.
    • Experience of facilitating groups.
    • Experience using motivational interviewing techniques in both 1:1 and group settings.
    • Strong IT skills.
    • Understanding of continuity of care, holistic care needs and community services.
    • Experience of promoting and supporting Equality and Diversity.
    • Knowledge of the issues facing people with substance use challenges.
    • Knowledge of the Recovery Agenda.
    • Knowledge of Safeguarding.
    • A thorough knowledge of and commitment to the 12-step recovery process.
    • Knowledge of Community Support Services.
    • Knowledge of the criminal justice sector.
    • Previous experience of working within a community or a prison setting.
    • Experience of utilising clinical supervision.
    • Knowledge of NHS health and wellbeing outcomes
