  • About The Role

  • Looking to launch a meaningful career in Health & Wellbeing?

This is your opportunity to join The Forward Trust as a Trainee Health & Wellbeing Practitioner on a 1-year fixed term contract (Full Time – 35 hours per week), gaining hands-on experience while working towards a recognised qualification (subject to criteria).

You’ll shadow an experienced team member, receive structured mentoring and supervision, and complete our Workforce Development Programme, designed to equip you with the practical skills, knowledge and confidence to become a competent practitioner.

    What You’ll Gain

    • A structured traineeship with regular progress reviews
    • Completion of our Workforce Development Programme
    • Practical, on-the-job learning alongside formal study
    • External supervision as part of your development
    • A clear pathway into a long-term career in recovery services

    The Role

Based on-site at HMP Highdown (Category C male prison), you’ll work with adults aged 18+ who may present with low-level mental health needs and/or substance misuse issues. The service operates 7 days a week, so weekend working is required on a rota basis.

    You’ll develop skills in:

    • Managing and planning a caseload effectively
    • Conducting risk, initial and comprehensive assessments
    • Delivering 1:1 interventions and co-facilitating group programmes
    • Supporting recovery plans and through-care pathways
    • Working collaboratively across healthcare, mental health and prison teams
    • Recording and analysing data for audit and reporting
    • Building competency in second signatory processes

In partnership with NHS healthcare providers, The Forward Trust delivers integrated clinical and psychosocial substance misuse services across Surrey prisons. Our approach is trauma-informed, gender responsive, and recovery-focused, with strong multi-disciplinary collaboration at its core.

If you're motivated, resilient and ready to build a career that makes a real difference, this traineeship offers the training, structure and support to help you succeed.

Please see attached Job Description for full details

All prison-based roles are subject to enhanced DBS checks and HMPPS security vetting. These checks can take up to 5 months to complete. Any offer of employment will be conditional upon the successful completion of both checks.

Please note if you have lived overseas within the last 5 years then checks may take longer.
